Wedemeyer, Major General Albert
- Wedemeyer, Major General Albert
1897–1990
Wedemeyer became CHIANG Kai-shek’s Chief of Staff, replacing STILWELL, in October 1944. He had served in the War Department, General Staff as an expert in war plans from 1941 to 1943. In August 1943 he was appointed US Deputy Chief of Staff under Lord MOUNTBATTEN at his new Southeast Asia Command (SEAC) planning the invasion of Japanese-held bases. In October 1944 when Stilwell was recalled from China at Chiang’s request, Wedemeyer was sent in. Stilwell’s post had been Commander in Chief of Land Forces in China, but ROOSEVELT decided that America would no longer take responsibility for the worsening situation there. Wedemeyer was therefore sent as Chief of Staff to Chiang Kai-shek. His task was to attempt to establish some cooperation between Chiang and the Communists and to insure that US aid was correctly used by the Kuomintang.
